Necks & Neckblocks
Long used in building classical guitars, Spanish cedar carves and works very much like mahogany. Its stability and tonal qualities are also like mahogany. The fragrance will remind you of a new Martin guitar (their linings are Spanish cedar).
Despite its name, Spanish cedar is a hardwood from the same family as mahogany. It was used to build Martin and other parlor guitars from the 1850s until around 1916. Those builders switched to mahogany when it became easier to obtain, but they still use Spanish cedar, especially for necks.
Fingerboards
In recent years Palisander Santos fingerboards have become quite popular—especially with electric guitar builders—due to its sustainability, excellent resistance to wear and ability to hold frets like a vise. Plus, its non-porous surface makes it feel silky smooth and almost effortless to play.
